1256 | __________ Relationship to Reece-Thornton Genealogy Database Compiler: Uncle __________ Marriage: Not married. __________ Newspaper Article: Student Killed As Auto Skids And Overturns A 17-year-old Alamo High School senior was killed instant- ly and his 18-year-old compan- ion, also of Alamo, escaped ser- ious injury early this morning when their car skidded out of control near the intersection of Highways 18 and 45, south of Jackson. William Boyd Thornton was pronounced dead on arrival at Jackson-Madison County Gener- al Hospital. He was Madison County's first traffic fatality of the year. James Elbert Ward, Route 2, Alamo, driver of the car, sus- tained bruises and abrasions and is reported to be in fair condition at General Hospital. . . . . Young Thornton was the son of Mrs. Gladys Thornton and the late Mr. Claude Thornton. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Barney Smith of the Nance community near Alamo and Mrs. Charles Reece of Alamo. A senior in high school, he had worked for several years at the Alamo Meat Market. He was a member of the Alamo Baptist Church. Services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at Alamo Bap- tist Church with the Rev. Rob- ert Benson officiating. 1267 | ||Charles Nelson Lown was the son of Henry Nelson Lown and Nancy Brown. He was born in Barrytown NY and lived and worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the Union Army 8 Oct 1864. He served as a Private in Battery G, 1st N.Y. Light Artillery from date of enlistment until musterd out 19 June 1865. Battery G participated in the decisive fighting around Petersburg, VA that led to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. After the war he returned to the family farm in Barrytown, NY where he lived and worked until he married Rose E Gruntler on 17 Sept 1878. They had two children before she died in February 1882.
