Zachariah Barlow Family

The first ancestor that I can document in Guernsey County is Zachariah Barlow, born circa 1772 in Maryland. He married Margaret Boyer, born circa 1787 in Maryland, on March 28, 1807 in Baltimore, Maryland. According to the 1820 US census Zachariah1 Barlow lived in Derry Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. In 1840, he owned 147 acres in Section 18 in Londonderry Township, Guernsey County. He and Margaret had at least nine children: Elizabeth (1807-1890) married John McPherson; James (1810-1868) married Mariah Starkey; Zachariah2 (1812-1903) married Mary Wells; Provina (1815- between 1870-1880) married John Clay; George (ca 1816-1871) married Mary Ann Starkey; Margaret (1819-after 1900) married John Danley; William (1821-1823); John (1826-1898) married Pheba Jane Ferguson; Joshua (1829-1911) married Lucinda McVey. Zachariah1 and Margaret are buried in Carlisle at the Berne Union Methodist Cemetery in Noble County, Ohio.

Zachariah2 Barlow married Mary Wells 10 September 1836 Londonderry Township, Guernsey County. They had thirteen children, all born in Guernsey County: Phebe (1846-1924) married George Lashley (see George Lashley Family); Isabel (1837-1838); Elizabeth (1839-1926) married David T. Sears; William Cogal (1840-1916) married (1) Margaret Ann Kincey, (2) Sarah Jane Baker, (3) Mary I Baker; John Jefferson (ca1842-?); Margaret Ann (1844-1874) married James H. Wise; Levi Wells (ca1848-1883); Martha Jane (1850-1860); Charles Bond (1852- 1942) married Margaret Talbert; Frances Mariah (1854-1915) married James William Smith; Mary Catherine (1856-1888) married Matthias Devaul; Sarah J (1857-1913) married David Gibson; Elma Isophene (1860-1925) married Delbert Jackson. Zachariah2 and Mary died in Grant District, Jackson County, West Virginia, and are buried at the Union Methodist Church in Windy Ridge, Wirt County, West Virginia.

William Cogal Barlow, oldest son of Zachariah2 , fought in the Civil War for the United States Army. On June 28, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in the Union Army, 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company I. He was honorably discharged at Philadelphia June 6, 1863. In February 1864, he reenlisted as a Corporal in Company I, 25th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was finally discharged June 18, 1866. He suffered a back injury during his first tour of duty and shortly afterwards he contracted smallpox. Some years after his discharge, his health began to gradually decline and it seriously affected his ability to work.

William Cogal Barlow married (1) Margaret A. Kincey June 14, 1863 in Monroe County, Ohio. William and Margaret had two children, Elma Cora (1864-1888) and Laura Virginia (1867-1936). Margaret died August 18, 1868 in Monroe County, Ohio. William then married (2) Sarah Baker (1840-1902), December 3, 1870 in Noble County, Ohio. They had five children: Mary Isabel (1872-1946); Landon Lee (1873-1964); Violet A. (1875-1898); Lillie Florence (1877-1904); and Arthur Garfield (1880-1959). Sarah died February 23, 1902. William then married (3) Mary I. Baker (1849-1913), August 11, 1903 in Clark County, Illinois. William died January 5, 1916 in Martinsville, Clark County, Illinois, and is buried at Auburn Cemetery, Clark County, Illinois.
