    Notes
    • "Van Amersfoort had a violent temper. As a result, he spent much time in court and jail. In 1668, he was exiled from the colony for physically and verbally abusing his wife and mother-in-law. Although no direct explanation has been found, it is believed that this is the reason that all of his children used the 'Van Steenbergh' surname." (Why the name Van Steenbergh was chosen is not known)
Was a member of the Dutch Militia and fought with Stuyvesant in the Indian wars
Jan Jansen sold the Wyldwyck estate to his wife's siblings "seven months prior to his exile"
"Jan disappeared, fueling speculation that he may have been 'encouraged against his will' to disappear"
